BUSINESS CLASS : old seat format, with very limited recline and seat
pitch makes for cramped seat area. In all aspects, these are uncomfortable seats
and about premium economy comfort standard . Score : 3/10
FIRST CLASS : old generation seat, quite comfortable in sitting position
but full recline lacking support. No proper seat privacy - an out of date
product in need of change. Overall score : 5/10 |

These are new seats in shells on a new long-range Boeing 777. They went completely flat and allowed
for a good night's sleep. The seats are wide and stylishly upholstered, have good padding and a nice
headrest, and come with a very large personal TV screen on the shell back of the seat in front. There
is also a dividing panel between each seat which you can raise if you want more privacy

This is a cheap ticket from India to the United States, and you get what you pay for. Seats were
vintage (to put it mildly), the overhead compartments were too small for even the smallest rolling
carry-on, something you may not realize until you are actually on the plane. The seats weren't
uncomfortable, yet they paled in comparison to updated seats on BA, Lufthansa, SAS, and Virgin. The
seat offers decent support and space (the storage under the windows offers an additional flat
surface). Power is DC only, so bring your car charger if you want to use a laptop or recharge a
battery.

12 brand-new flat seats arranged in pairs with no dividers. Means an enormous
amount of space, but lack of privacy. Seats are wide and fully adjustable in all
positions, including fully flat. I prefer these modern pair seats to cocoon
seats because they are very large (e.g. BA crams 14 seats that are very narrow
at the feet), softer than cocoon seats (because of the "roll-down" technology,
cocoon seats have to be hard), and great if you travel with a companion or if
no-one sits next to you. No PTV but a good DVD player, which works 100% of the
time (unlike the sophisticated IFEs).

Air India has 12 older generation lie flat seats in its First Class cabins in
the nose of the 747 - seats are arranged in pairs. Tons of legroom, thick, plush
padding on the seats, good lumbar support that can be adjusted electronically.
Negatives - lack of a privacy screen in between seats (and behind), and a rather
flimsy foot rest. If Air India want a competitive First Class product, these
seats, while very comfortable, are not what will take it to the top.
