Rating:

Older 747s with the old style seats, not shell or lie flat.
Comfortable enough, but the video system is outdated. The food was good, great wine, and the flight
attendants outstanding.

The new shell seats were very comfortable, and the on demand video excellent. Food was very good,
wine outstanding. Ground check-in and personnel were most accommodating. A five star experience.

TPE-BNE : paid a fortune for this with very limited recline, not enough
to sleep, they sell this as their Dynasty class which is not the same
they use on the TPE-FRA routes which reclines more. Beware - check plane
they use.

Rating:

I must admit that the seats should recline about 10 more degrees... I found it
very, very hard to doze off, and when I did, it wasn't for very long. The seats
were just not comfy enough. Along the same lines, the foot rest partition is too
short - I am only 5'11" and found it hard to extend my legs to enjoy the foot
rest. I was sort of cramped into the seat, and just didn't enjoy the comfort
that I figured I would find.

The seats do not go to a full flat position but do recline to a generous
position to give you a good nights sleep. The service is superb.

TPE-LAX, Business Class lounge was above expectations but very crowded. The
newly designed cabin was a pleasant surprise and service was exceptional.
However, I found the newly designed seats to look rather cheap and did not
recline as much as desired. The AVOD system was great and offered a wide variety
of choices. My partner, on the other hand, had a different take on it when half
way through the flight his malfunctioned. Besides that and the uncomfortable
sleeping position, China Airline's Business Class was slightly above average.

Boeing 747-400 First
Class
Rating:
TPE-LAX, The older First Class seat is an 180 fully reclinable electronically
operated chair with 83 inches seat pitch. There is a partition in front of and
behind you, and you won't intrude upon by others. Each seat has a computer
controlled PTV equipped with a 6 inch touch screen monitor, but the IFE is not
the AVOD system. LAX-TPE, flying the First Class in the newest 744 is equipped
with shell seat, which can recline 180 degrees to become completely flat and
each passenger have private space. The seat has adjustable headrest, electrical
lumbar support, adjustable and inflatable bottom cushions and electrical massage
functions. Each seat also equipped a 15 inch adjustable PTV screen and the IFE
is AVOD system, Fantasy Sky.

The new seats on China Airlines dreamliner are worse than the old ones. The old
business class recline to about 145-150 degrees and offering tons of leg space
but the new ones offer very little leg space and only relines to 140 degrees
with a very uncomfortable angle. but the entertainment system is much better
from a 6.5 inch to a 10.4 inch tv screen with AVOD systems. it's sort of like
the A330 business except these seats don't have shells and don't have the tv in
font of you.

Great cabin but they need to make the seats recline more. Best seats are
emergency exit row upstairs where you can pull down the crew seats if you are
seated in a window seat in row 10.

LAX to Taipei in First: New interiors are great! Seat was comfortable to sit in
but very hard for sleeping. Overtime, the foam should have more yield but right
now it is very firm. IVOD system was very good and the best I have used so far.
Big 15 inch screens that swing out and also give camera views from the front and
below the craft. Food was above average and wine selection excellent. Bathrooms
extra large and even had a window.

IAH-TPE, cabin service was excellent and seats while not the lie flat were still
very comfortable. The leg rest could have been a little longer for me, 5/11.
Controls were easy to use. I slept maybe 6 hours straight on the SEA-TPE sector
so it couldn't have been that much of a problem! Certainly better than on the US
carriers I normally fly. Later flew A330 TPE-HKG, seems the seats have less
pitch than the A340 and are also different.

Rating:

On a recent flight from LAX-TPE, I flew on the upper deck of a 747-400. The
seats were wide enough, but did not recline enough to offer a decent amount of
sleep. Since I am on the taller side (1.8M), my feet did not receive quite
enough support. Additionally, on of the seat functions was broken. The
entertainment system was okay as it did not offer on demand movies, though the
selection was adequate. Considering the price, I suppose it's a relative bargain
but I still prefer Cathay Pacific business class as the seats are more modern.

Class
Rating:
I had a first-class experience on China Airlines in September from LAX-TPE.
Despite being in one of their older 747s with the old-style first class seat,
there was plenty of space, the seat went flat to 180 degrees and had plenty of
shoulder room. There is a partition in front of and behind you, so you never
feel intruded upon by others. Service was top-notch - certainly as good as CX
and better than JAL, in my opinion. Limited snacks available and not listed in
menu. Breakfast was absolutely fantastic, but was served at 7 PM just prior to
landing! (strange). Their amenity kit, which used to be excellent, is now
pathetic! But the seat is as good as any other first class seat (except perhaps
Singapore Airlines). At least your feet aren't stuffed into a little box cut out
in the seat in front (a la JAL's new skysleeper solo in first)!

Business Class
Rating:

I hope that FlatSeats will adjust the comments for China Airlines, now they have
cut their First class on Airbus A340 planes. The old first class on 747-400
fleet is absolutely terrible - old, bumpy, worn out seats that reflect a very
bad image for China Airlines. Makes you think again about their poor safety
record when you see these tatty old 747-400 cabins. And now China Airlines have
introduced a Premium business class seat on A340 (in place of 1st Class). It is
a joke, and has a seat recline of 150 degrees!? That is something China Airlines
should have brought in 5 years ago - now they will not get my custom any more.
Shame!

Rating:
A340 First Class is a very spacious design with handy amenities, including your
own closet and personal "cubby hole" to place other personal items. The table is
huge and covers a very large amount of space when unfolded. Seat function is
very easy to use with simple controls and large buttons. 15-inch screen is very
clear and vivid, so movies are more enjoyable. A video camera view of the
landscape is also available from your seat with stunning views of the elevation,
also "neat" during take-offs. A satellite phone and a 110 volt socket was locate
on the seat which made it very handy to use my laptop computer. Seat also very
comfortable providing lumbar support and bottom cushion adjustment as well. The
design of the seat was very elegant using a large amount of polished wood, and
seat overall was very very comfortable.
