Cathay Pacific Airways First Class and Business Class seat

BUSINESS CLASS : a new seat is being installed in 2007 for long haul aircraft, using the
angled, single pod layout. A full comfort evaluation and testing is yet to be completed, but on
an initial test the seat does appear to have some comfort shortcomings - feeling very narrow, and
quite flimsy in operation, with little personal stowage space, and length can feel constricted for
taller passengers. Score : 7/10
FIRST CLASS : Pod style seats that provide a good standard of overall comfort and privacy.
A widce range of adjustments make the sitting/relaxing positions comfortable, and seat padding
is acceptable (although some older seats now becoming worn). The flat-bed position is very comfortable
and offers a good length and width. Overall score : 8/10 |

HKG-SYD return. Hate the new seats. Too narrow (I'm not particularly broad for a
man) but kept hitting elbows and other parts of my arm as I turned. The angled
approach also means that looking out the window is literally a pain in the neck.
It also means it can be cumbersome trying to get out of the seat. Little space
for personal items.

Cathays New Business Product HKG-SFO, seat 88 K upper deck. Excellent seat,
could be a little wider. On an 11 hour flight I managed to get 7 hours of sleep.
Excellent stowage for glasses etc. The length of the seat is good. Bathrooms
could be a little bigger.

I am very disappointed with the new design of the new CX business class seat.
After travelling on it for several times, I feel CX is going backward while its
competitors has new and superior design (like SQ). Probably their business is
too good now therefore they don't feel the competition in the market. As a
frequent flyer to CX I believe they need to be more cautious about this point.
As far as I know quite a few of "CX-lovers / frequent flyers" are thinking of
switching to other airlines due to this. We feel it doesn't worth the money.

LAX-HKG (via ICN) A seemingly old 747, showing its age with a problem aircon
system that had a permanent, noisy cold, gale blowing right down my neck. After
three requests, crew came with towels to wedge in the gap thus fixing the
problem but I bet its still causing grief to some other poor passenger in 14K.
AVOD pretty good but sloping seats, although comfortable give the usual sliding
grief - who invented those?! Wouldn't rush back to Cathay.

I've read that many people are disappointed with the new business class, and to
be objective I don't think they are actually that bad. Service is like usual,
excellent. As for the actual seats themselves. Its mainly just the width
problem. Yes it is a little cramped in terms of width and you do need to stand
up to stretch a bit. But i think its just a compromise. The older seats gave you
more width, but you get less privacy, and you have to sit next to someone (which
is good if you know them). The new seats allow u to gain aisle access much more
easily, and u get a totally flat bed. The high walls makes it seem darker and
quieter when u sleep. The only problem i have with its is the poor access to the
windows. I actually like watching the descent when the entertainment system
turns off. As for the screen. The picture quality was excellent. I guess some
planes had some issues, but i don't think its a fleet wide issue.

New First Class Suite in 1A - spacious and comfortable in both sitting and in
bed mode. Excellent storage and wonderful large TV monitor - only slight
complaint was that it was not moveable at all. Excellent IFE - huge choice and
great headphones. Lovely mattress and duvet and big pillows and v nice pyjamas.
Great width as well as length to the bed and the most comfortable I have been
long haul in a long time.

Flew A330 between Penang/HK and B777 between HK/Incheon. The first flight
sector was not too bad. Comfortable with less passengers. However, more busy
and crowded the HK/ICN sector was a bit disappointed for premium airlines like
Cathay Pacific. Its business seats were old and worn. They were just old
business class seat types.

This sector was from SYD-HKG in the new business class. Overall, the experience was satisfactory.
Service was very good. The new seats are really flimsy. The PTV is large but movies are very poor
resolution. I think the screens are ok as the menu screens are of a high resolution, but the tv and
films/map are poor. Armrests feel like they will break off if you push on them. The reading light is
silly and awkward to turn on off. I actually hit myself in the face trying to adjust it. When
putting the seat into bed mode, sometimes the seat goes in the opposite direction to the switch,
there are creaks and groans as you extend plus my armrest always got stuck out of its retracted
position. In general, flat is better for sleeping than the old inclined seat, but unless Cathay keep
this cabin maintained, this product will look terrible very quickly.

Very disappointing. Seats just not up to standard when compared to those offered by other airlines
in Business Class. As for the flight form HK to Australia, it was pretty awful. The plane was
clapped out, the interior shabby and the entertainment system poor.

I found the new business class to be a major step up from the old business class and quite
comfortable for both sitting and sleeping. AC power outlets are an improvement from the old Empower
outlets. The service on Cathay was excellent. The food and the IFE were also top notch and as
advertised. The seating arrangement is essentially the same as Virgin Atlantic Upper Class with the
seats in a fish-bone pattern of cubicles facing away from the windows. This allows for a privacy
but is different than the standard two across business class and requires a getting used to for some
people. For those who also fly VA, I found the seat to be superior in comfort to VA, but the overall
fit and finish as well as storage space to be slightly below VA.

The new CX business class pod is a disaster - bedspace area is too narrow. With your new CX system
you cannot talk to your family or business colleague, the seats are facing inwards so you cannot see
out of the windows for takeoff and landing, the sun shines on the TV screen so you have to close the
window blind. The FAs have to struggle to reach the food over your TV to serve you - the food tray
does not swivel so once you are served you are stuck in there till the tray is taken away. There is
an awkward car seat triple belt system with a cross strap that seems redundant given that you are
wedged like a sardine in the pod already. CX have gone from a sloping business class bed to a flat
bed in a dark coffin pod with tiny armrests that you have to hunt for.

The seats are narrow and causes claustrophobia since you cannot see over the partition. There is no
vantage point where you can see out a window. The materials of the seats are of low quality and
pieced together. There is plenty of leg room, and in flat bed mode comfortable. The tv screen is
rather large but grainy. The 120Vac outlet suppl is a plus when you have to work. I much prefer to
have the old seat configuration!

The seats don't really feel like suites. Good luck if you have a travel mate, because you won't be
able to have a conversation with the partitions and there's not a visitor seat integrated into your
personal space. Sleeping comfort is acceptable, although the width is a problem. On the bright side,
the cuisine, service and inflight entertainment are up to standard.
