BUSINESS CLASS : the newest style of Business class seat offered by JAl is the angled lie-flat format. A mid
performance in product quality terms, the seat is fine for sitting / relaxing, although many will find the
seat cushions to be firm and lacking contour padding. In the full recline, the seat is angled to the floor, and the
footrest plate does not offer much help in preventing the sliding down effect. Seat width is adequate, although not
matching many of the better products now offered in Business class. Score : 7/10
FIRST CLASS : Individual seat pods for the newest First class seat provide a good seating area,m some
reasonable level of privacy, although side partitions are quite low. The seat is very wide and offers a good comfort
level for both sitting/relaxing and when reclined into the flat bed. The seat cushions err on the side of being too
firm, and this is particularly noted when the seat is flat and cushions provide the mattress surface. Score : 8/10 |

NRT to LAX, Solo seats on this route. Seat was great. Very comfortable, and lay flat seat was
fantastic. FAs put bottom sheet on bed, very nice touch. Blanket could have been better. The only
thing could be improved was air vents. Three flights with JAL and no air vents for seats. Because of
this temperature seemed to go from warm to cold all of the time. First flights ever with no air
vents. I would travel with JAL again in a minute. Service and food was excellent. FA's come around
to everyone in First Class, bowed and thanked you for flying JAL.

Tokyo-Brisbane. Horrible, seat was a major disappointment, reclined about 20-30 degrees like a
standard economy seat and nothing more, entertainment system was haphazard - staff could not tell
you which movie was on which channel, and they all started at different times (ie not synchronised
and you could not re-start), and meal was cold.

NRT-JFK. The route just get upgraded to flat shell seat from old seats. I sit in
the first row right behind gallery on the 1st floor, and the seat was great. I
slept a lot. The food was great too! They changed the meal service a little bit
recently. Instead of serving you at a specific time, you can ask for your second
meal anytime you want to (and probably as many times as you want). There was one
down side though. The power outlet was not enabled, and I was not able to use my
laptop throughout the trip. Other than that, I had a great rest.

JFK/NRT. Great sleeper seats with seven seats across in business class. They
even accommodate my 6'3" frame, allowing me to sleep peacefully. These seats are
comparable to ANA and better than anything I've seen on the US carriers to
Japan. If you fly on JAL 047/048 to/from JFK/NRT you will get the old business
class seats comparable to the US carriers!

Brisbane-Narita-New York, Vancouver - Narita - Brisbane. Old style seating on
all legs. Very disappointing. Maybe the new seats are a myth. Service & meals
were excellent. Our children were well looked after. Will never fly JAL again
until new seating is guaranteed.

NRT-ORD on JL005. If you are a tall person, the shell seat may not be long
enough in sleep mode especially if you have seats in front of you. I am not
particularly tall 5ft9in (178 cm) and when was in the sleep mode, the foot rest
extends into a cubby hole in the seat in front of you. My feet felt cramped and
I could not stretch it straight. On my return trip JFK-NRT, I requested a exit
row seat where I can leave the foot rest in the closed position so that I can
stretch my leg past the length of the leg rest for a much better sleep.

Somewhat disappointed - JAL First Class on
JL009/010 between Chicago and Tokyo was
not as luxurious as I expected. The seat
was fine but didn't come with any bells
and whistles that go above and beyond
business class. The food was great,
service nice (but not outstanding) so
JAL gets a 3 out of 5. More personal
service, a more luxurious seat
experience, and attention would have
earned them a 5. It's not just about the
seat - some of us actually still care
about service!

NRT-BNE use of older aircraft is far too much the norm. Often this is a 300 or
200 series. The seats are old, clunky and (still) smell of smoke from the days
when JAL allowed smoking on the upper deck. When a 400 series is used for the
run, it has the older, non-pod seats which are much the same as the SUD
aircraft. It seems that Australian bound passengers are experiencing the 'used'
aircraft whilst other JAL routes enjoy the upgraded models.

JAL's First Class cabin along with the sleeper style (older style) seats are the
pinnacle of comfort in my opinion. No where else in the air have I felt such
high levels of comfort, quiet and luxe.

My wife and I flew in one of the cabins with the newest "skysleeper
solo" seats and they were very comfortable indeed. Leather is soft and cream in
color. Small sliding "filing cabinet" on the side to hold magazines, papers,
etc. There is another compartment at one's feet to hold shoes. Flattens to 180
degrees but your feet end up fitting into a somewhat cramped cut-out into the
seat in front, which surprised my wife (she did not like this aspect of the
seat). The cabin colors are nice -hard part of seat is seafoam green (sounds
strange but is actually very calming) with a spacious area to the side in gray
with a bright orange table and another table that folds out from the opposite
armrest. AVOD system is difficult to sort out at first - takes time! Screen is
too small and is situated at an odd angle in relation to seat. Service on our
flight not as good as expected!

NRT-CDG in new Business Class. Great seat and
privacy in the upper deck. Entertaining system and selection of movies for every
taste. The flight passed by conveniently. Only pity is that western menu is
being served all at once on a tray and one may not enjoy starters first, hardly
a place to enjoy eating. Inconvenient for Business Class.

Great comfort in the Shell Seat - certainly much better than the Cathay Pacific
and SWISS - seats I have used since Nov'03. Quite long, and the recline flat
angle does not feel like you are slipping off. I think the Virgin new seat is
better, but then you have to suffer those dreadful cabin staff on Virgin - JAL
offers good comfort and truly great service.

Boeing 747

NRT-CDG on JL405. The first class cabin on this flight usually has
lie-flat seats in a 2x2 configuration, but this particular flight had the "solo"
seats, albeit of the older type (the new "pod" type solo seats are in operation
on the NRT-JFK and NRT- LHR routes). My wife and I had the two individual seats
in the first row which are the only two seats in the cabin which are in
proximity to each other. Although the seat converts to a true lie- flat position
like most first class seats, the cushions are somewhat hard, and the equipment
looks old.
