BUSINESS CLASS : Full flat bed seats are provided in this SAA business class, and comfort levels are very well ranked, with the seat being ranked world's Best Business Class seat for 2 years running. The seats are fully flat, and have a good amount of space around the footwell area, so you are now reclining into the seat in front like some airlines. The seat cushions are firm and slightly bumpy when fully reclined, but seat width is good and a comfortable sleep position delivered. Seat pods offer a good level of privacy, and unlike many newer Business class seats, these SAA seats are front facing, arranged in pairs and not angled into the cabin / away from the windows. Score : 9/10

FIRST CLASS : South African Airways has now discontinued its First Class service as the Boeing 747-400 aircraft are taken out of the airline fleet.

Just travelled the FRA-CPT-FRA route. Top rate service, top rate comfort. Compared to the DL B763 new Biz-Elite seat the day before FRA-CPT, SAA was wonderful. Uninterrupted sleep on a true flat bed. It is a shame, US carriers cannot match this sort of service/cabin element. Will look forward to the next SAA business class trip soon!

What use to be a pleasant trip on SAA to anywhere in the world, now has become a question of SAA trying to cut costs to the detriment of its customers. Seat was comfortable as usual, but SAA can learn a lot about service from Thai Airlines (which I prefer these days). Not only is Thai Airlines cheaper than SAA, but the quality of the food is much better. SAA should concentrate on providing better service to business class passengers if it wants to get out of the red.

An excellent seat, one of the best in the air. I slept comfortably most of the way from JNB to IAD!

IAD-JNB in Premium (Business) Class. The seat was the most comfortable I have ever experienced. I slept 10 of the 15.5 hours to JNB.

Seats were excellent and the service was particularly dedicated - beds turned down whilst in the bathroom and drinks topped up without request. Check-in when connecting in Johannesburg was less than pleasant and took considerable time however this is more the ground services than the plane itself. Cannot fault those on board - from the size of the dinner table to the smallest salt and pepper shakers - the menu and wine list was excellent. I normally cannot sleep on planes but I was out like a light.

HKG-JNB-HKG. Seat comfort was best I have ever experienced, and the first time I have had a proper sleep on a plane. Well done to SAA for not serving breakfast and turning all the lights on 3 hours before an early morning landing like most other airlines do.

JNB-ACC-IAD in business on the B744, and service was excellent. The lie flat seats are very comfortable for sitting straight up, reclining, and for sleeping, with everything being controlled by digital controls in the armrest. A great travel experience, and would love to fly it again.

We were originally booked on Lufthansa and the flight cancelled, so we were rebooked on South African Airways. What a delight! I am a former PanAm Purser, and this is the best airline I have flown since "the good old days". Beautiful aircraft, incredibly attentive staff, very comfortable, great food. I now own a travel agency, and I rave about SA to anyone who will listen.

CPT-LHR, Comfortable lie flats, maybe not as good as on the 346, but I had a good sleep. Service, food and drinks OK. I never use the IFE, I like to get my sleep! The arrivals lounge at LHR is really nice, great showers and a good breakfast. This again gives you another hour of sleep on the 'plane! Would give it 4* if this was available to differentiate from the 346

Excellent seat, the best C class seat on the Europe/South Africa run. Seat, service and amenities are hard to fault. Would not hesitate to fly SAA again.

Pretty good for flying. Not quite like one's own bed, but superb for a flight. First time I've flown transatlantic without arriving like a zombie due to lack of sleep. Well Done SAA!

London to Johannesburg flight often and really like the SAA flat business class seats on the 747s they use for this route. They're much longer and wider than BA's (only 7 seats across, not 8 as in BA). Nice duvet and reasonable pillow. Especially since it's an 11 hour flight, that extra room makes all the difference.

Its by far the best C long haul product that exist. Flat beds are like normal beds with plenty of space - nice pillow and duvet. Very good food and most of all excellent wines.

LHR-CPT. One of the best flights we've experienced. The best of the new Premium Class flat bed seats. Slept 7 hours - with duvet under and blanket over for best comfort. Lack of a proper privacy screen between seats would be my only complaint.

My wife and I flew between Atlanta and Jo'Burg and back. The duvets and pillows we wonderful. The pitch at 78 inches between seats is the greatest we have seen. The meal offerings were well above average; however the selections were a little limited. Overall the experience was very good and arrived in both directions well rested.
