The new First class cabins are now becoming fairly widely fitted across
the airline's fleet, this test being conducted on one of their Boeing
747 - 400 aircraft. In this front cabin the seats are arranged as
individual pod units around the outside of the cabin, together with a
pair of double seats at the centre rear of the cabin.
The individual seat pods offer a reasonable amount of privacy, although
the wrap around side hood areas could have been made a little larger
when one compares this with other First class products in the market.
This is nonetheless a good quality true flat-bed seat. The seat width is
quite generous a combines with an adjustable side armrest which provides
additional width when in the fully reclined, flat-bed position.
Looking at the different seat comfort factors, it provides a good level
of support and adjustment when in the fully upright, seated position.
The control pad has a preset relaxation setting, and this was also found
to offer a good level of comfort for the semi-reclined position. Pop the
control pad again and your seat will recline into the full flat-bed
position - this is where the seat performs best, with the seat cushions
flattening down to provide a true horizontal service that does not have
any uncomfortable bulges or protrusions when you want to get a good
night's rest. Cabin staff will of course make the bed up for you, and as
well as the now customary duvet and pillow, a thin undersheet/mattress
cover is also provided to enhance the sleep experience.
Inflight entertainment comes by way of a 15 inch LCD monitor, with
Malaysia airlines providing audio and video on demand - a selection of
between 30 and 40 movies and a similar number of short video features is
on offer, plus a fantastic selection of audio with nearly 200 CDs
enabling you to create your own music playlist.
So in overall comfort terms, this is a great new product being provided
by Malaysia Airlines that does enable a good onboard sleep, and the only
fault that we could find was that in the flat-bed position the small
headrest area can still remain somewhat intrusive - definitely a case of
padding out with a spare pillow if you can find one.
As part of the new First class product, these aircraft are also now
fitted with the mood lighting system in the cabin - offering you the
chance to slip of to sleep as the cabin darkens to simulate evening, and
similarly waking you up to the dawn of a new sunrise.
Another item worth mentioning is that this new First class cabin for
Malaysia airlines has also been fitted with extra large lavatories -
finally a decent amount of space enabling you to change into the
complimentary pyjamas, and generally move around the washroom in
comfort.
