TEST VERDICT

9/10

This ANA First class seat is the real flagship product for the airline, and it has to be said this is one of the nicest First class seats that you are likely to find.

Each seat is housed in its own private, compartmentalised pod area, and the overall size and shape of the pod enclosure offers more individual privacy than virtually any other existing First class seat.

The first thing we noticed upon sitting down is that this is an extremely spacious seat pod area - in fact borne out by the fact that being 84 cms wide, this seat is currently amongst the widest available onboard any airline at this time.

The seat pod area has a large built in shelf at the front of the pod, which runs around the side of the seat and back to the main seating and IFE control pad area - above this useful storage shelf in the front of the seat pod is a very large fixed format IFE screen.

In the upright, seated position we found that the comfort levels are good, the only criticism being that the headrest can be slightly intrusive in this upright position and the adjustment levels were somewhat poor. However, as soon as you flip the controls and start adjusting the seat into the semi-recline or relaxation position, the seat comfort aspects come into their own. It might take some passengers a far few minutes to work out how to adjust the footrest plate so that your knees are not in an uncomfortably high position - however once done, the semi-recline position offers great support from your feet upwards.

Switch to the flat-bed mode and the seat quickly goes out to the fully horizontal mode. In this flat-bed position, the only critique applies to the fact that a slight ridge exists between the seat cushion areas and this may well be noticed by slightly taller passengers - the seat cushion comfort is also on the firm side when compared to some other airline's first class products.

However in overall assessment of this ANA product it has to be said that it delivers a very high quality of comfort and general privacy - it also incorporates some other well thought out features. A number of useful storage pockets are provided in different positions around your seat, there is a foot light provided should you need to search out something from your hand luggage when the cabin is fully dark, and the individual reading light actually provided a decent quality of illumination by which one can read a book etc.

All in all a great product that is certainly up there amongst the top First class seats in the world at this time.
