This is the older style seat currently offered by Asiana Airlines,
fitted only to their Boeing 747-400 aircraft, with First Class not
offered across other aircraft types.
Configured 2 x 2 in the cabin, the seats do have a small enclosing pod
around each pair, with a liftable separating partition between each
seat.
With Asiana Airlines refitting this First Class cabin in 2007 with new,
individual seat-pod style units, this review is the end of the road for
the existing product.
The seat in the fully upright position is quite comfortable, with a good
standard of leg and back support, and headrest wings that can be
adjusted.
Electronic controls adjust legrest and backrest separately, and these
work well in terms of finding a comfortable semi-recline position -
lacking somewhat in terms of lumbar / lower back support.
Press the switch for the flat-bed format, and the seat quickly turns
into a horizontal surface. However, being an older style seat you do
tend to find that the joints between the different seat cushions make
slight ridges in what should be a true flat surface. I also found that
the legrest is slightly too short to fully support one's feet when
laying fully stretched out.
A seat / mattress cover is provided when the cabin staff make up the
beds, finishing with a very soft and comfortable duvet and pillow - and
the dividing partition is pulled up at this time.
The IFE is quite poor for these older seats - small screen, and a very
limited choice of just 4/5 movies and short features, running on a loop
and not on-demand.
Finishing touches for this First Class cabin (apart from 5 Star cabin
staff service) include a well stocked Bulgari amenity kit, and nicely
tailored Asiana Airlines sleep suits.
